Justice of the Peace

The Cooke County Commissioners Court is currently taking applications for Justice of the Peace Precinct 1.  The Justice of the Peace is the presiding officer of the Justice Court. The Justice of the Peace has jurisdiction over fine only misdemeanor offenses, and in civil matters where the amount in controversy does not exceed $10,000. A Justice of the Peace also performs various magistrate duties. The Justice of the Peace may preside over hearings pertaining to suspension of driver licenses and issuance of occupation driver licenses. The Justice of the Peace conducts various other legal proceedings and inquests proceedings. The Justice of the Peace may conduct marriage ceremonies and serves as ex officio notary public for the precinct. The Justice of the Peace has administrative and financial duties concerning the keeping of records and fee and expense reports. Texas Election Code 141.001 requires that a Justice of the Peace:  Be a United States Citizen; Be at least 18 years old; Have not been determined mentally incompetent by a final judgement of court; Have not been finally convicted of a felony from which no pardon or release from the resulting disabilities has occurred; and Have resided continuously for 12 months in Texas and in Cooke County JP1 precinct for six months.  Applications will be accepted until Friday, February 28th, at 5:00 pm, and are available online at www.co.cooke.tx.us, or can be picked up at the Human Resources Office located on the 3rd floor of the Cooke County Courthouse at 101 S. Dixon, Gainesville, TX 76240.
